  Indonesia

MentorLink and Partners International teamed up for a six day training experience for leaders representing strategic ministries in important areas throughout Indonesia. The inherent flexibility of MentorLink’s approach and materials enabled the trainers to adapt quickly and effectively to the unique needs of the participants.

The style of the MentorLink training represents the best of adult non-formal educational strategies and methods. Self-discovery learning is central, and activities included frequent small group discussions, videos, role plays, life mapping, personality profiles, case studies, and other approaches to increase the retention of what is learned. Lecture is kept to an absolute minimum, so that learners can internalize as much as possible and also replicate what was modeled through their subsequent mentoring.

Our colleague from Partners International particularly praised the MentorLink team’s incarnation of the values. “The time with H. and R. was incredible. They were wonderful instruments of God in the lives of the key mission leaders from the indigenous ministries.. Many Indonesians come from cultures that are emotionally repressive… Self awareness and self disclosure are generally to be avoided, because such ends up being a means by which gossip and betrayals take place. The church/mission agencies are not exceptions, so there is an assumed, strongly agreed upon code of silence due to a lack of trust and genuine relationships. Leaders become emotionally and relationally reclusive, and this arguably negatively impacts their ministry effectiveness and outcomes. So to have two disarming, vulnerable, and highly respected elder Asian leaders model personal vulnerability, and then equip others to do the same for their own lives as well as for those whom they mentor—this is a strategic and deeply meaningful contribution.”

The training ended with participants washing one another’s feet. There was not a dry eye in the entire room, and this was not merely because of the ceremony. The foot washing represented outwardly what God had inwardly done in their hearts throughout the week. We joyfully look forward to what God will do as these leaders engage in mentoring in the days and weeks ahead.
