One of MentorLink’s partner organizations in this huge South American country is MAPI, sponsored by OC International. David and Debbie Kornfield have lived and faithfully ministered to pastors from their base in Sao Paulo for many years. In addition to ministry hardships, the Kornfields’ daughter Karis had to endure two multiple organ transplants
Since David’s initial meeting with Stacy, Gary and Clyde over two years ago, he has opened his heart and ministry to the Lord in new ways. In a recent letter, Debbie wrote about some of the exciting transformation happening in MAPI is making:
“MAPI has done good things. It has cared for, trained, and networked many pastors and leaders. It has developed a model for pastoring of pastors. Through books and training materials it has influenced more people than we know about.
Still, David estimates that MAPI is serving but 1 percent of the pastors in the huge nation of Brazil. He longs to do more for those most responsible for the health of the church and therefore the effectiveness of Brazilian missionaries in other places. So he has embarked on a big new project: Turning MAPI Inside Out!
Rather than seeking to bring more pastors into MAPI (though that does keep happening), David wants to reach out from the base of MAPI to help the leaders of every denomination in Brazil do a better job of caring for their own pastors. This will look different in every denomination and tradition. The important thing is not how it’s done, but that it’s done effectively within each different context.
In order to jumpstart ministry to pastors in denominations all across Brazil, Dave has been holding a series of small consultations of denominational leaders in various cities, in preparation for a national consultation in August in São Paulo. This will NOT be a training time—“do it like this”—but rather a true brainstorming and vision-sharing event that will call on invited leaders from across the country to think creatively and prayerfully about the needs of the pastors and how they can be met.
