“The Holy Spirit is given to the believer to be and to do everything in him that God wants him to be and do. The Spirit is given to him especially as the Spirit of prayer and supplication. Is it clear that everything in prayer depends on our trusting the Holy Spirit to do His work in us? We must yield ourselves to His leading and depend only and entirely upon Him.”

  Ask, Seek and Knock
Sep 18, 2009

I don’t know about you, but I have claimed this passage many times in prayer: "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!” (Matt 7:7-11)

I admit, God has answered my prayers sometimes and at others, He has not – at least not in a way I recognized. With this in mind, I asked myself this morning when I read this passage, “do I really believe this?”

What I know is that God is good. His very nature is good. He knows us intimately and is fully aware of our needs. He wants us to grow in our dependence on Him and is delighted when we ask for something from Him.

Beyond this, seeking is actively pursuing His response. Knocking is perhaps even more aggressively coming to Abba with our prayer need.

No matter what I really believe, the issue is am I acting. These are all actions we take when we come to Abba.

Today, what are you asking, seeking and knocking for from Abba?

Because He is good,
